Surabhi Chand 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2003 "Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high; Where knowledge is free; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls; Where words come from the depths of truth; Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection; Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sands of dead habit; Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action; Into that heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake." By - Rabindranath Tagore. ------------------------------ Above lines are impressive and touching. What do you think after read this? You must think but as what you are, from where you are, whom you are....!

manoj 0 Report post Posted December 8, 2003 i had also gone through geetanjali..as I am in Bengal I can also read bengali. He had, himself, translated it into english and it makes us easier. Tagore has very different vision and more spiritual. In most of his poems I found his call for God and his aim to be with him. They have serene and peaceful picture. These lines are one of them filled with his goodwish for our freedom from evil thoughts that weaken and bind us.He shows the real freedom lies within. By - Rabindranath Tagore. ------------------------------ Above lines are impressive and touching. What do you think after read this? You must think but as what you are, from where you are, whom you are....! Fear is an essential component of all living minds(humans or animals). Those who don't have fear are either dead or they don't have mind at all. As per Arjun in Mahabharata, Bravery is not the absence of fear but it is the realization that there is some thing more important than fear. Brave people also have fear but they still go forward in battle because they think that living a moment of dignity is more important than living a full life of shame. So even the bravest people fear to lose their life and fear is a mandatory emotion of human mind. So I don't agree with Ravindranath Tagore; becaue I believe that there is no place where the mind is without fear. Knowledge is never and nowhere free. The meaning of knowledge is to know that there is still something beyond the boundry of knowledge. We achieve one frontier of knowledge only to know that there is still a lot to be explored. So knowledge is always bounded by ignorance. When you light a torchlight, there is umbra in the centre and penumbra is surrounding it. So knowledge is like the bright umbra that is always surrounded by dark penumbra of ignorance. Thats why knowledge gives rise to humility. World has never been broken by narrow domestic walls. This line shows that Ravindranath Tagore's view was very shortsighted. If he could mentally rise up and see the world from a satellite, then he could know that no matter how high a wall people make between themselves, still the earth remains one. For a person who has risen to a great height, the walls disappear. From moon you can see only one earth. No words come from the depths of truth because at depth there is only silence and peace. Once a man came to Gautam Buddha and asked buddha whether he had seen God or not. He asked Buddha to describe how the GOD looks like? But Buddha remained silent. The man was annoyed and he left the place cursing Buddha as fraud. Buddha later told to his pupil that if that man couldn't understand the meaning of silence, he couldn't understand the meaning of words. He told that whatever a person says about god is all false because god is something who can't be described in words. Nomatter how good you explain about god, it still becomes untrue. Because god can't be bound in words. So god(truth) can be achieved, described or explained only by silence(meditation).
MohanTara 0 Report post Posted October 12, 2008 Great posting by all, despite that it's original post dates back from 2003. N it's more interesting how Npaudel went on 2 elaborate on Subhadi's posting. The topic abt fear n courage never fails 2 astonish me. The depth of it all. It is said that the fear of public speaking is a fear greater than death 4 most people. The fear of public speaking is caused by the fear of ostracism, the fear of standing out, the fear of critiscism, the fear of ridicule, the fear of being an outcast. The fear of being different prevents most people from seeking new ways 2 solve their problems. The Japanese were aware of 3 powers: The power of sword, jewel n the mirror. The sword symbolises the power of of weapons. The jewel symbolises the power of money. He who has the gold makes the rules. The mirror symbolises The power of self-knowledge. This self-knowledge, according 2 the Japanese is the most treasured of the 3, 4 it is only when we, as a human, look ito the mirror do we find truth. In the movie, Jerry Magurie, starring Tom Cruise, there r many great 1 liners. But there's 1 liner, which i thought most truthful. It comes from a scene, where Tom was leaving the firm. He has just been fired n he is asking the entire company, "Who wants 2 come with me??" The whole place is silent n frozen. Then 1 woman speaks up n says, "I'd like 2 but i'm due 4 a promotion in 3 months'" An English philosophy n econimist John Stuart Mill once wrote, "1 person with a belief is equal 2 a force of 99 who have only interest." If we dont learn 2 pick our own fight, we'll go through life being a coward, letting bullies of the world push us around. Living a life as a failure.
