Having successfully completed the Youth Solidarity Festival during mid-November as a warm-up event, Kathmandu University is gearing up for the upcoming South Asian Universities Youth Festival 2008 (SAUFEST).

The upcoming SAUFEST is the third edition of the mega festival, which plans to involve more than 450 university students of South Asia in various programs going to be held at the Kathmandu University grounds in Dhulikhel. The festival is scheduled to start on February 7.

SAUFEST is a concept of the Association of Indian Universities to promote active collaboration and mutual understanding amongst the South Asian countries in educational, social, cultural and economic fields. It also aims to bring the youth of South Asian countries together to share views, experiences, innovations and common ideas.

In this year's festival, there will be 25 participants each from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka while five participants each from the Indian Ocean Rim countries: Australia, Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Oman, Kenya, Seychelles, Singapore, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

The festival is for five days, and KU will provide hospitality to the delegates and participants in its own campus. The first day starts with registration, while an inauguration ceremony starting at nine in the morning will commence the festival officially. A four-hour-long cultural program reflecting the diverse culture of Nepal will entertain the guests and hosts alike to end the day's programs.

The second day includes yoga and local tour for the visitors followed by special lectures, mimes and folk dances and light vocals. The third day also starts with yoga and local tour. Special lectures, fine arts and folk orchestra and group songs are scheduled next.

On the fourth day, the only program included is a main tour to the capital city. The final day features project exhibitions and debates followed by the closing ceremony.

The first SAUFEST was held at the University of Jammu of India in 2006 while SNDT Women's University of India organized the festival last year.
