Visiting Scholars Program

http://www.amacad.org/visiting.aspx

The purpose of the Visiting Scholars Program is to support the work

of

younger public policy analysts, humanists, and social scientists who

show

promise of becoming leaders in their field, especially those who

work on

multidisciplinary topics. The Program offers opportunities for them

to

carry out their individual research as well as to collaborate with

Academy

Fellows on shared scholarly or policy-related interests. It also

helps to

create a national network for scholars in the early stages of their

career, assisting them in their research and professional

development.

Finally, it has established the House of the Academy as an active

research

center for intensive scholarship by individuals from diverse

disciplinary,

institutional, and geographic backgrounds. The VSP is an important

way to

share the Academy's extraordinary intellectual resources, including

many

of America's most distinguished leaders in science, scholarship,

public

affairs, and business and the arts and to invest in the future of

the next

generation.

In addition to providing time for independent research, the VSP

arranges

conferences involving colleagues from the Boston area and beyond.

Visiting

Scholars have the opportunity to join in seminars sponsored by the

Academy's program areas as well as to participate in social

gatherings and

other regularly scheduled Academy activities. Neighboring

universities and

research institutions partner with the Academy in the work of the

Program.

Scholars are chosen by means of a national competition. Most reply

to a

request for proposals circulated via websites and electronic mailing

lists

as well as through targeted mailings to academic departments and

relevant

scholarly councils and associations. Applications are reviewed by

Fellows

expert in the candidates' fields; their recommendations are passed

on to a

final advisory committee that takes into account not only the

quality of

the applications but also the fields, institutions, and geographical

areas

represented by the candidates. Seven/eight scholars and

practitioners are

chosen annually.

Patricia Meyer Spacks, President of the Academy, 2001-2006, and

Edgar F.

Shannon Professor of English, Emerita, University of Virginia,

serves as

chair of the VSP.

Some fifty academic institutions from across the country have become

University Affiliates of the Academy, with a special interest in

developing and supporting the VSP.

The Visiting Scholars Program is undertaken in collaboration with the

Harvard Humanities Center, which provides access to the university's

research facilities and works with the Academy to plan joint

lectures,

seminars, and informal discussions.

Over the past four years, the Visiting Scholars Program has grown in

stature and visibility. Applications have increased 70 percent since

2002.

The outstanding teaching and research appointments the "alumni" have

received, their published and forthcoming books and articles, and

their

enthusiasm about the benefits of the Academy experience reflect the

success of the program.

Folger Shakespeare Library Offers Short- and Long-Term Fellowships

Deadline: Various

The Folger Shakespeare Library ( http://www.folger.edu/ ) in

Washington,

D.C., offers research fellowships to encourage access to its

exceptional

collections and to encourage ongoing cross-disciplinary dialogue

among

scholars of the early modern period. Each year, scholars may compete

for a

limited number of long-term (six to nine months) and short-term (one

to

three months) fellowships.

Long-term fellows are selected by an external committee that

considers the

following criteria in making its selections: importance of the topic;

originality and sophistication of the approach; feasibility of the

research objectives; and the

applicant's need for the Folger collections. The Folger is open to

traditional as well as innovative scholarly methodologies and

agendas. Two Mellon Research Fellowships will be awarded and carry

stipends of $50,000 and $40,000. Three National Endowment for the

Humanities Fellowships will be awarded and carry maximum stipends of

$40,000. NEH Fellowships are restricted to U.S. citizens or to

foreign

nationals who have been living in the United States for at least

three

years. Mellon Postdoctoral Research Fellowships are open to scholars

from

any country. The application deadline is November 1 of the year

preceding

the one in which an applicant plans to take up his or her residency.

Short-term fellowships carry a stipend of $2,000 per month. The

criteria

for success in the annual short-term fellowship compe-

tition are the same as those for long-term fellowships, although the

internal selection committee tends to value need for the

collection above other considerations. Each year the Folger awards

twenty

to thirty short-term fellowships. The application

deadline is March 1 of the year in which an applicant plans to take

up his

or her residency.

Franklin Research Grants

Scope

Since 1933 the American Philosophical Society has awarded small grants

to scholars in order to support the cost of research leading to

publication in all areas of knowledge. In 2006-2007 the Franklin

Research Grants program awarded over $332,000 to 75 scholars, and the

Society expects to make at least that many awards in this year's

competition. The Franklin program is particularly designed to help meet

the costs of travel to libraries and archives for research purposes; the

purchase of microfilm, photocopies, or equivalent research materials;

the costs associated with fieldwork; or laboratory research expenses.

Franklin grants are made for noncommercial research. They are not

intended to meet the expenses of attending conferences or the costs of

publication. The Society does not pay overhead or indirect costs to any

institution. Grants will not be made to replace salary during a leave of

absence or earnings from summer teaching; pay living expenses while

working at home; cover the costs of consultants or research assistants;

or purchase permanent equipment such as computers, cameras, tape

recorders, or laboratory apparatus.

Eligibility

Applicants are expected to have a doctorate or to have published work of

doctoral character and quality. Predoctoral graduate students are not

eligible, but the Society is particularly interested in supporting the

work of young scholars who have recently received their Ph.D. American

citizens and residents of the United States may use their Franklin

awards at home or abroad. Foreign nationals must use their Franklin

awards for research in the United States. Applicants who have received

Franklin grants may reapply after an interval of two years.

Awards

Funding is offered up to a maximum of $6,000 for use in calendar year

2008. Grants are not retroactive.

Grants are payable to the individual applicant. Franklin grants are

taxable income, but the Society is not required to report payments. It

is recommended that grant recipients discuss their reporting obligations

with their tax advisors.

Daland Fellowships in Clinical Investigation

Scope

The American Philosophical Society awards a limited number of Daland

Fellowships in Clinical Investigation for research in the several

branches of clinical medicine, including internal medicine, neurology,

pediatrics, psychiatry, and surgery. The committee emphasizes

patient-oriented research.

Eligibility

The fellowships are designed for qualified persons who have held an MD

or MD/PhD degree for fewer than eight years. The fellowship is generally

intended to be the first post-clinical fellowship; but each case will be

decided on its merits. Preference is usually given to candidates who

have not more than two years of post-doctoral training and research.

Applicants, both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals, must expect to

perform their research at an institution in the United States, under the

supervision of a scientific advisor. Direct contact with patients is

required.

Nomination

Candidates are to be nominated by their department chairman in a letter

providing assurance that the nominee will work with the guidance of a

scientific advisor of established reputation who has guaranteed adequate

space, supplies, etc., for the Fellow. The advisor need not be a member

of the department nominating the Fellow, nor need the activities of the

Fellow be limited to the nominating department. As a general rule, no

more than one fellowship will be awarded to a given institution in the

same year of competition.

Award and Duration

Stipends for the fellowship are $50,000 for the first year and $50,000

for the second year. The term of the fellowship is one year, with

renewal for one year if satisfactory progress is demonstrated. Requests

for renewal are due on the first Friday of January. Payments are made on

July 15 and January 15. The Society provides no funds for institutional

overhead.

The Society expects that essentially 100% of the Fellow's time will be

devoted to research, and the fellowship will constitute salary support.

With the cognizance of the committee, teaching or clinical service of a

limited amount is permitted, and a small portion of the fellowship may

be used for supplies. The committee reserves final decisions until it

has a clear understanding of the Fellow's financial support for the

project, whether in the form of additional salary granted by the

institution at which the Fellow is located or from other fellowships.

Deadline, Notification

Applications for first-year fellowships are due no later than September

1 (the effective deadline in 2007 is Tuesday, September 4). A complete

application includes all materials requested on the form, in the correct

number of copies, AND the 3 confidential letters supporting the

application. It is the applicant's responsibility to verify that all

materials reached the Society on time contacting Linda Musumeci,

Research Administrator, at LMusumeci@amphilsoc.org

or 215-440-3429. A written decision is

mailed to candidates in January.

When appropriate, the applicant should provide assurances that safety

measures will be taken for potentially hazardous projects. When

necessary, the applicant and his or her supervisor should discuss the

field training that will be provided and the provisions for experienced

supervision.

Journalists

Program Description

>From now until August 15, 2007, the Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships

(AFPF) is accepting applications from print journalists for the 2008

program. Successful candidates will report for American news

organizations from March-August, 2008. Since 1984, AFPF has provided

training opportunities to approximately ten journalists annually. It

is hoped that through such training, Fellows will learn practices,

standards and values of U.S. journalism which they can adapt, share

and apply in their own countries.

In addition to the general fellowships, AFPF offers specialized

fellowships by topic and region, including business, education,

health, investigations, religion, as well as the Daniel Pearl

Fellowships which are offered to journalists who come from areas that

Daniel Pearl covered as a journalist - South Asia, the Middle East and

North Africa. Those receiving specialized fellowships partake in

activities related to their interests. For the Daniel Pearl

Fellowships, those activities are in line with the mission of the

Daniel Pearl Foundation - to encourage dialogue among people of

different cultures, reduce cultural and religious hatred and create a

Professional: International Human Rights Internship Program (IHRIP)

Grants 2007-2008

Program Description:

The International Human Rights Internship Program's (IHRIP) mission

and work are based on the belief that human rights activists have

knowledge and skills, as a result of their day-to-day work, that are

important to the success not only of their own work, but the work of

other activists and organizations, whether in their own or in other

countries and regions. The human rights movement--in specific

countries and regions as well as internationally--is strengthened

through the exchange of this knowledge, experience and expertise.

In line with this conviction, IHRIP makes grants available to human

rights organizations in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America,

the Caribbean, East and Central Europe and CIS countries to enable

their staff to undertake professional development exchange projects.

A project can be:

A professional attachment, through which a staff member from an

organization in one country serves as a temporary staff member of a

host organization in another country, acquiring on-the-job training in

a specific area of work or skill.

An on-site training, in which an individual from one country who has

particular experience and expertise in a specific area of work

provides training to the staff of an organization in another country.

A study tour, through which a staff member from an organization learns

more about a specific area of work or about a particular strategy or

approach to work by visiting and consulting with two or more human

rights or human rights-related institutions in one or more other

countries.

N.B. IHRIP gives low priority to support for attendance at courses or

workshops. Proposals for such support will be considered only in cases

where the desired training is narrow in focus and fulfills a clearly

defined institutional need.

Deadline for applications: August 31, 2007; December 31, 2007

Award Amount: A grant covers the travel of the staff member or trainer

as well as a basic living stipend and health insurance for the staff

member (or trainer). Grants vary depending on the location and length

of the project, and typically range from $1,000-10,000.
