U19 World Cup- A Platform for a future of cricket

Recommended Posts

I have my eyes over two cricket events for the moment: One is the CB series being played in Australia and another is U19 CWC in Malaysia. The later one is on my top priority list as Nepal is playing in it. Well guys, I dunno what u think about U19 cricket, but for me...it's an initial stage to make a place in the senior side. Many players like Brian Lara, Graeme Smith, Michael Clarke and Virender Sehwag made their fortune from this level of cricket. And for Nepal, it's the most prestigious event so far.

Though Nepal's performance in the senior side is timid, the junior side has always become a fierce one. Since we started participating in U19 world cup, we have defeated many giant countries, Kenya, Bangladesh, Pakistan, South Africa and New Zealand. We were the plate champion on the last edition. We are the team to which none of the countries could take lightly.

So, WC commenced yesterday and there is no any major upset, as the experienced teams easily sidelined the associate sides. Unfortunately, Nepal lost its first match against Srilanka as well. The disappointment arose again from the batting side...despite scoring 61/1, we lost all our ten wickets till we reach 175. We could not manipulate the good start that we were given by the openers. Some inspiring shots and we gave our wickets playing over ambitious shots. That's the problem with our cricket...we have to learn shot selection.

Well, I don't wanna figure out our mistakes now...we are still capable of killing some more giants. Our performance is still very high class as compared to other associates. I hope the best for our team in the upcoming matches against Australia and Namibia.

Good that u started something about Cricket-one of my favourite topics to talk. i remember you how we had talked about World Cup in 2007. :D

Yes, Now, Regarding U-19 Match, I am not that hopeful that Nepal can do anything that great But I am happy that Nepal has got chance to play. I am also following the matches. Like you said, Nepal lost against srilanka and Nepal, again, lost today against Australia. I find bowling of Nepal very good like they restricted Australia just around 200 Runs but our batting is not that great.

I am not going to blame our yound guns for failure. In fact, it's triumph for them that they represented our country in international level and I am sure that on coming years, they excel. In a country wrecked by conflicts, it's very difficult to spend on sports and despite that situation, our boys have shown their stamina representating the country in international level.

Hope that they do better in coming years.

Win and lose is a part of the game....and we can just expect a win against team of high calibre like Australia and Srilanka. Losing 2 games knocked us out of the superleague race and we are yet again set to play in a plate championship. As you say CM, Nepal has shown maturation in bowling, not letting those giants to pile up huge scores. But batting is dissapointing like always. I am especially disappointed with our middle orders, who could not justify with the talents they have. On the other hand, Malaysian team, whose entrance to world cup was merely because of hosting the tournament, won its match against Zimbabwe. Malaysia has got a better facilities than Nepal, and I won't be surprised if it will replace Nepal in the qualification round for the next edition of world cup.

I was really upset with the way CAN had arranged the practice matches for our team. We had hardly any good matches before world cup. We just played three matches against Bangladesh and two matches at Malaysia prior to World cup but it was so late that our team rarely had any chance to understand what should be improved. Even in the senior level, there are no any quality series, where Nepal can play. In this situation, how can we expect Nepal to perform well in WCQL Division 5, which is a gateway to senior world cup? Whatever we have achieved so far, it's all because of personal effort from our players...there is no standard operation from CAN. If the condition is like this, I can foresee many players retiring from cricket at the very tender age of their career. The hint is given by U19 captain Paras Khadka on his interview with asiancricket.org, where he mentioned that he was not sure to play after WCQL 5.

Well, as the trend passes here in the same way as it used to be. Nepal is down in the plate championship. Let's hope they would produce the same result.

Anyway, I am glad to see all you guys again talking about cricket in this chautari. Especially, love_united.....thanks for initiating this thread.....

Good to see you newapasa. We guys should be meeting here in WNSO to have hot talks about cricket. Nepal had a consolation win today against Namibia, and that's a tough match. Poor batting once again!! Despite the well deserved 50+ by opener Mahesh Chhetri, our score couldnot climb above 164. Bad bad!! Both Gyanendra and Paras failed...our pioneer batsmen. It's upto our bowlers, once again B) to defend the lowest total and give us a win. It's a close match though...win only by 3 runs. It seems the next match will be a deciding match for our journey in Plate as well, as we face Zimbabwe. We have never won against Zimbabwe...so may be this time, we wud like to kill this "not so giant" team. Anyway, you guys are looking CB series or not. Do you think Austalia is playing with same pride of being invincible team like before? I think Australia is no more unbeaten this time and both India and Srilanka have equal chance to win the series?

Who do you think is likely to win CB series? Is it:

a) Australian Kangaroos?

B) Indian Tigers?

c) Srilankan Lions?

Cricinfo has this report to say about our Nepal's match.

Nepal U-19s 164 (Chhetri 62) beat Namibia U-19s 161 (Westhuizen 65) by three runs

Scorecard

A patient half-century from Mahesh Chhetri, some tidy medium-pace bowling and a whole lot of nerve from young Gyanendra Malla snatched Nepal a three-run victory from a tricky situation in Penang. Defending a total of 164, Nepal had done well to chip away at Namibia's batting order but at 142 for 7 in the 42nd over it appeared they were running out of options. That is when left-arm medium-pacer Raj Shrestha dismissed top-scorer Louis van der Westhuizen for 65 and set into motion a tense next seven overs.

Taking a gamble on 17-year-old Malla, who had never bowled in his first-class career, Nepal's captain Paras Khadka got it spot on. In the 45th over Malla had Pikky Ya France edging behind, and then bowled Morne Engelbrecht for 7 with the last ball of the 49th over to finish a tense contest. Nepal's grip had been administered by a tight start with the ball, tightened through slow left-arm spinner Rahul Vishwakarma's economical 2 for 23 and finally it was Malla who stole the show.

Earlier Chhetri,Nepal's wicketkeeping-opener, played a lone hand in his side's total of 164 against a disciplined Namibian bowling attack. Having won the toss, Nepal's batsmen could only manage small partnerships as Namibia kept it tight. Chhetri held up one end sensibly but his team-mates, unsure as to what route to take, failed to offer anything substantial. Westhuizen, with his left-arm spin, bowled an economical 10-2-17-2 and was well backed up by his bowling partners. Unfortunately for Namibia, the same was not the case when Westhuizen was batting.

Though bowling and feildin is extraordinary, again we do have the same problem i.e batting failure which cause defeate. CAN n coach should think about it.
