  1. KATHMANDU, APR 05 - A strike called by medical practitioners across Punjab in Pakistan has left in the lurch dozens of Nepali doctors and post-graduate medical trainees. Thousands of doctors working in public hospitals across Punjab resigned and many others have gone on strike after the provincial government failed to meet their demands for a raise in salary, leaving many hospitals desperately short-staffed and struggling to administer patient care. According to Dr Arun Kumar Singh, the President of Nepalese Students’ Organisation, Pakistan, more than 40 Nepali Post-graduate trainees for MD/MS/FCPS/MCPS and house officers working in different hospitals and institutes in Punjab have resorted to the strike as local hospitals and the provincial government failed to pay them since March. The Nepali Embassy in Islamabad is closely monitoring developments and has advised Nepali doctors there not to align themselves with the agitators. It has asked them instead to take leave until the dispute is resolved. “Due to the conflict between the Punjab Government and the Young Doctors’ Association (YDA), Nepali doctors are under pressure,” Dr. Singh wrote in an email response to a question. “We have advised them to talk to principals of hospitals and medical institutions (and to tell them) that as foreigners they do not have any sides to take. It would be better for them to take leave and stay in the hostel until the ongoing agitation is over,” said Deputy Chief of Mission at the Nepali Embassy in Islamabad, Durga Bhandari. Dr. Singh said the Nepali doctors and medical practitioners are being threatened and forced to join the strike. “We are in a dilemma. We don’t know if we should report for duty,” he said. Some hospitals and medical institutions like PIC, King Edward Medical University, Ganga Ram Hospital, General Hospital and Jinnah Hospital have asked doctors to evacuate the hostel by Tuesday. Approximately, 70 Nepali students, including 40 doctors, are pursuing higher education in Punjab province alone. Altogether, more than 200 Nepalis are pursuing medical courses in Pakistan. The Nepali doctors have urged Nepali authorities, including the Nepali Embassy in Pakistan, to take immediate steps to ensure their safety. http://www.ekantipur.com/the-kathmandu-post/2011/04/05/top-story/punjab-docs-stir-nepali-docs-fraught-in-pak-medi-strike/220245.html

  4. KEMU stops salaries of foreign doctors By ASIF CHAUDHRY submitted 2 days 16 hours ago LAHORE - King Edward Medical University (KEMU) has stopped salaries of around two dozen foreign national postgraduate trainee doctors working in various departments of the Mayo Hospital, besides asking them to stop working till further orders. These doctors who became victim of the KEMU policy, belong to Nepal, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Iran, Palestine, and other countries of the Middle East. They got admissions in KEMU giving preference to the said institute to the medical institutes of the other countries. Before joining KEMU, the doctors had gone through all the process of admission that also included the admission fee of Rs 100,000 each, The Nation has learnt. When contacted for comments on the issue, Medical Superintendent of the Mayo Hospital Dr Zaffar Ikram confirmed the decision of stopping foreign national PG trainee doctors’ salaries. He said that the hospital management had requested the KEMU committee to review its decision. He hoped that efforts were in progress and the doctors would be paid soon. A university source told The Nation that a committee constituted by the KEMU management that comprised of some professors has recommended immediate stoppage of salaries of only foreign national PG trainee doctors. The committee in its recommendations asked the Mayo Hospital administration to immediately ensure implementation on the recommendations till further orders. The MS, when asked about the ‘objections’ raised in the recommendations that led to the stoppage of salaries especially of the foreign doctors, said that he was unaware of the situation. Around a year ago the said doctors had cleared the entry test exams for Doctor of Medicine (MD) and were discharging their duties for around 12 hours almost daily in different wards besides joining their classes regularly. Meanwhile, the foreign doctors have termed the decision a ‘cruel act’ on the part of the KEMU committee saying that it is a serious violation of human rights. They said that this decision would damage image of not only the university but also of Pakistan in the world. No foreign doctor will think of taking admission in Pakistan’s any medical institute, their many other colleagues had earlier left their jobs and gone back to their countries when the KEMU stopped their salaries in the past, they maintained. A PG trainee doctor Sandev who came from Nepal told The Nation that the KEMU did not inform the foreign nationals about the reasons to stop their salaries. Sandev said that as he and his other foreign colleagues did not have alternate source of income, it would be almost impossible for them to continue their further stay in Pakistan if their salaries were not released. He has appealed to the Punjab government to immediately intervene to resolve the issue of their salaries otherwise all the foreign doctors would go on strike from tomorrow (Monday). http://www.nation.com.pk/pakistan-news-new...foreign-doctors

  8. I truly believe that effort and patience can make a man fortunate because with hard work and devotion one can attain success in life. This world is not the world of dreams we should be practical and should face the reality of this world. To gain something, effort and devotion are the two main ingredients. To quote Jesse Owens “We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self discipline and effort.” In this world nothing is as easy as a pie to eat. We have to put in our efforts and take pains to gain something! To be something! Nothing is done itself we have to put in our effort and hardwork only then will the result be positive. Paul J. Meyer said “Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning and focused effort.” To prove my point I would like to share some examples with you. Firstly, the soldiers of a country put in all their efforts to fight with the enemies and save their country from enemy aggression. The soldiers make this effort so that the citizens of the country can enjoy freedom. Another example is that of a mountaineer; if a mountaineer wants to climb a mountain he will slowly and patiently make an effort to climb it. There may come a moment when he will think that it is impossible but a little more persistence, a little more effort and what seemed hopeless failure might turn into a glorious success! Wait! Not only will our hardwork and devotion make us reach the sky but also the ability to endure delay — that is patience. Patience is also a very important ingredient to become successful. As Benjamin Disraeli has said, “Patience is a necessary ingredient of a genius.” By patience and effort you can achieve all the luxuries of life. The unreachable thing becomes reachable, the unattainable thing becomes attainable and the unavailable thing becomes available. The best example of patience is that of a hen. The hen waits for the eggs to hatch and the chick to come out. This waiting is patience, if the hen would not wait for the eggs to crack and would smash them to get the chick then the eggs would be spoiled and she would get nothing! As Benjamin Franklin put it “He that has patience can have whatever he wills.” So all I’d like to say in the end is that with effort and patience anyone can make his fortune because effort and patience is the secret of winning everything in life.

  12. THE MAYONNAISE JAR AND 2 CUPS OF COFFEE When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee... A Professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous yes." The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. "Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things -- your God, family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions -- things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else -- the small stuff." "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls." The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first -- the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand." One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."
  13. Won’t you be my valentine? “Will you be valentine?” the most popular phrase of February is coming closer to being echoed in every country of the world soon. As we all know, this is the time of the year when for just one day love is in the air literally with all those banners, balloons, posters, cards, advertisements and people wishing each other ‘Happy Vals Day’. This is time of goodwill, love gestures and telling people you care, so in the spirit of love let’s explore the land of WWW and search for the some powerful ‘Objects of Affection’ that will give us the power to make this day a great one for those whom we love the most. The web is a very powerful tool for demonstrating your love for another and there are many creative ways to show a special someone in your family like a brother, sister, parents, a friend or friends, a sweetheart, or even your dog how much you care. One of the most popular way, however, is to use ‘e-cards’. E-Cards, like the name implies, are greeting cards available on sites like http://greetings.yahoo.com, www.123greetings.com, www.bluemountain.com and www.lovingyou.com (for others type ‘Valentine Greeting Cards’ as keywords in www.google.com). These are usually animated pictures or flash based movie files that will tell someone that you love them. To send a card, you can visit one of the sites and choose from amongst the hundreds of cards available. Fill out a form with your personal information, message and the recipient’s email address (without this you cannot send the e-card) and send. The receiver will get a link which they will click on to view their e-card. Another highly effective way (which has also been used for centuries) is to write your valentine a love letter or a poem. However, since not all of us are writers, you can use the writings of authors worldwide to convey your message. These you can email to your val. or can deliver personally written on paper or greeting cards. These writings range from the immortal words of Emily Bronte’s ‘How much do I love thee…” to the emotionally Charged Pablo Neruda and his ‘I don’t love you as if you were the salt-rose, topaz…’ to Desi writers like Ahmed Faraz, Parveen Shakir, Meer Taqi Meer, and Ghalib. For English poetry you can search www.google.com for ‘Valentines Day Poetry’ or ‘Classic Love Poems’ and for good Urdu love poetry, I would recommend www.urdupoetry.com or www.urdupoint.com. For love letters, you can visit sites like www.lovingyou.com, or search Google with the keywords for ‘Classic Love Letters’. You will also find plenty of Yahoo! Groups (http://groups.yahoo.com) which are dedicated to love poetry or love letters and can also browse these for ideas. Now we have proven we love our val. in the online world. Let’s make their offline world special too. For hundreds of ideas on how to make your Valentine Day really really special you can visit http://www.theromantic.com/stories/valentines/main.htm, http://familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts/se...ntines_main_ms/, http://www.kidsdomain.com/holiday/val/ and http://www.links2love.com/valentine.htm. Some ideas here range from decorating the house or room (be sure to ask your parents permission first, before decorating your own house) with cutouts of hearts, cutting a heart shaped cake with your val. (or ice cream), or recording a CD of your favorite love songs for your val. (You can use the software ‘EZ CD Creator 6.0 for this purpose. It will also design a personalized CD Cover for you, which you can print out. Please ensure that you have a CD writer and a printer for this purpose). These are just a few ideas that can be used to make someone’s day special. There are thousands more which are just waiting on the web. So go forth young hearted mortals, bedeck your beloved’s screens with hearts that float, message mates that make them laugh, love poetry that will make them melt, and those hundreds of ways that show them that you care and for just one day let’s all celebrate the beauty of love together. Happy Valentine’s Day!
  14. Roses: The greatest way to express what you feel You may have a lot of feelings in your heart for someone but aah… as he/she comes in front of you, you can’t utter a single word. Lips remain silent and your precious thoughts remain within you. Here flowers prove to be your best friend or probably the best messenger, because every flower has a certain meaning and one can use these to express his/her unspoken desires. The language of flowers originated in Persia in the 15th century and was brought to Europe in the 18th century. In the 19th century, this floral code became popular and people sent messages in bouquets to each other. Since each flower, colour and number had a specific meaning; conversations between lovers took place without a single word being used. As far as roses are concerned, they are the perfect gifts to convey your emotions, 75 per cent of men say they would love to get rose flowers and most women love rose flower gifts as well. The rose, which is the king of all flowers, is found in various colours and each colour illustrates a different message. It is commonly accepted that all roses convey warmth and affection but the person receiving these may not know the meaning of roses and may not understand the symbolic language conveyed. It would be nice to ensure that you are communicating the right message to that special person. Read on to find the meaning of roses. Red roses Red roses symbolize romance, beauty, respect, courage, love and unity and are the most popular of all roses. Red rose is worn on Mother’s Day for those with mothers still alive. So these are all the meanings of roses. The next time you give or receive roses, you will know what they mean. Perhaps you will find out something that someone may have been trying to tell you all along or you may even tell someone something without saying a word and all because the rose flower is the most unique way to express your feelings.
