Four more universities soon

Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, Sept 11 - At least four new universities are coming into operation in Nepal shortly.

Officials at the University Grants Commission (UGC) have said they have completed a study on the proposed Open University, Madhya Pashimanchal, i.e. Mid-Western, University, the Sudur Paschimanchal Univeristy, i.e. Far-Western, and an Agriculture and Forestry University. The proposed Open University will be the first of its kind in Nepal.

Talking to the Post, Subash Chandra Dhungel, acting Chief Administrative Officer at UGC, said the Ministry of Education (MoE) will shortly expedite the process in this connection once the final reports on these proposed universities are handed over to newly-appointed

Minister for Education, Renu Yadav.

The government had directed the UGC to conduct a detailed study on the universities proposal some seven months ago. "We are looking for an appointment with the minister to hand in the reports," said Dhungel.

The government has planned to set up the Mid-western university in Mahendranagar, the Far-Western University in Birendranagar and the Agriculture and Forestry University in Rampur, Chitawan. The proposed regional universities are aimed at making higher education more accessible to people from all regions, while the Agriculture and Forestry University is expected to cater to the needs of the country in these sectors.

Officials at UGC informed that they are also conducting a detailed study on a proposed Technical University. However, the proposal to this effect was made by private parties, not by the MoE.

Currently, five universities -- Tribhuvan University, Nepal Sanskrit University, Pokhara University, Purwanchal University and Kathmandu University -- are operating in the country. The Lumbini Buddhist University is yet to come into operation despite having been given approval by the government.

Likewise, there are at least three deemed universities including the B P Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) in Dharan, the National Academy of Medical Science (NAMES) at Bir Hospital in Kathmandu and the Institute of Medicine (IoM) at Patan Hospital, Lalitpur, running under the Ministry of Health.

I didn't find this news so good!!! By seeing the standard of Pokhara Uni & Purabanchal uni, I would prefer not to give grant to any new university other then Technical university like Agriculture and Forestry University in Rampur. These university give affilation to Private College like anything, they just want to make money out them.

Pokhara University!! that never have cenrtainity about its exam schdule..a batch that had to be graduated almost 4-6 months ago is still haven't appeared for their finals, this is the standered of University in nepal and you expect our homt education standered wll be equivalent to western country.

Rite now, we need to focus on rising the standered of existing university and building a poper infrastructure for them. P\okhar University can server entire Western region but before that it should raise it standered. UGC shouldn't jus go with poltical influences. Their move wil bre sole responsible fro entire student who will be enrolling with those university granted by UGC.
