I don't know what kind of Netgear ADSL router you have, anyway if you have ADSL router with firewall ( I assumed) then

go to start, run
type cmd
then click on OK
then type ipconfig
press enter

you will see IP address, subnet mask and default gateway

then go to start, run
type http://192.168.0.1 (eg. if your default gateway address is 192.168.0.1)
click on OK
then it might ask you username and password for admin

Once you are logged on
click on firewall
then you can open a port
(i.e you can enable someone to connect to your PC or enable you to go outside)
I can't exactly say how you do it because of different make in different router

anyway

you need to select source WAN then type * on other field
destination select LAN then type IP address
on PORT select TCP and type the port number
(This enables you to accept others to connect to your PC)

For you to connect outside using that PORT
you need to select source LAN then type IP address on other field
destination select WAN then type * on other filed
on PORT select TCP and type the port number

This is to let you know how you open your port.

Some of the firewall has option to open port for inbound and outbound ony.
(some firewall -you might see IP filter or something like that)
Inbound - you are accepting others to use that port
outbound - to connect outside using that port

you can open port according to your neccessity.

( I can't say this can help you but to give you general idea only)

If you let us know more about your router features then may be I can give you more steps.

That's all for tonight.

hoina,

You only need static IP only if you host website from your own computer. Why are you having problem? i mean what problem exactly you have? You have download problem?

REMEMBER:
all the p2p software imports spyware and trojans; no matter how tight you are secure. Unless and otherwise you change your default router settings.

Download problem would be because of: spyware, trojans or firewall settings. Reinstall firewall. It should be enough to run in default setting. scan spyware and run AV.

No static IP is not the solution, neither you will get one unless you purchase one.

Port forwarding: ?? why you playing game across the internet?? smile.gif Portforward is very dangerous thig to do;; since you are using p2p and do port forwarding, intruders who are in p2p or elsewhere can easily access your box.

tell us if that doesn't solve smile.gif

Manchild bro

Here is the link for you regarding opening port on Netgear router.
Just ignore the wireless part.

FAQ.FirewallsRouters.NETGEAR

By the way thanks for letting me know about Shareaza.
I tried it, really a good piece of P2P software, like napster.

Seems like this is bit advance than other, never thought about that..... I will try this one as well,

if you are using firewall

QUOTE
Once you've set up your Router properly, make sure that in the Shareaza Settings >Internet>Connections that you check the box for "I can accept incoming connections"
Make sure that the port number matches what you've port forarded for in your router settings (port 6346)
Also make sure that the box saying "Random" ports is NOT checked.

To see what your external IP address is you can go to the router status link on the router menu.

OR click http://www.whatismyip.com/

since you are using router, external IP will be the IP address of your router which comes from http://www.whatismyip.com/. and your computer will assume 192.168.0.1 as Ip address of server (netgear router, which will work as DHCP server, distributing IP) and router will give you 192.168.0.2 as static IP address for your computer. once you use router it is llike small LAN network.

However, make sure you manually enter port: 6346 in firewall as well, (if it block)
