Position Announcement for Geographic Information Systems Specialist

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI; www.irri.org ) is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist to be located at the Institute’s headquarters in Los Baños, Philippines, and to lead its GIS research and development work. IRRI is supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and is a non-profit, autonomous organization engaged in research and training on rice-related technology.

Job description and responsibilities

The GIS specialist will work closely with bioinformatics specialists, rice geneticists, agronomists, crop protection specialists, and social scientists to develop tools for assessing technology needs and opportunities in rice-growing areas. This will include the delineation of recommendation domains for rice germplasm and management options, including natural resource management and integrative approaches to enhance the sustainability of rice systems.

The incumbent will:

Lead research in geospatial technologies to contribute to IRRI’s rice research and to effectively target rice technologies;
Manage the IRRI GIS Laboratory, keeping pace with the rapid advancement of geospatial, information and computer technologies;
Develop capacity in geospatial technologies among research partners, including national agricultural research and experimental stations; and
Liaise with other institutions in the development of geospatial data sets as international public goods
The position has a contract length of three years with possibility for renewal.


Candidates should have core skills as a GIS professional, including knowledge of remote sensing technologies, preferably with a background in agricultural science or natural resource management. Candidates should have demonstrated record of leadership, teamwork, and productivity in the context of a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment.
