PROGRAMME IN FORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT This course is a multidisciplinary Postgraduate Programme in Conservation, Management and Utilization of Forest Resources and Preventive Environmental approaches (Pollution Prevention and Waste Minimization). Overall Objective The overall objective of the Masters programme is to develop decision-making knowledge and skills required to manage forest resources and the natural environment. The course will train professionals and would be professionals to undertake tasks in forest management, conservation and utilization, and to manage water, soil and air pollution. Target groups The target groups for the Masters programme are those who are employed in forestry, environmental, and natural resource sectors, and others who wish to follow career in these sectors. Course structure The course consists of 4 semesters, each of 15 weeks duration. In addition, Field classes will also be conducted. Course fees Rs 35,000 for private candidates Rs 50,000 for candidates who are sponsored by their employers US $ 2700 per semester for Foreign students and Non-citizens (US$ 1350 for students from SAARC countries) Admission Requirements Degree in Agriculture, Biological Sciences or Physical Sciences or have a special degree in Geography or Geology. Each subject unit consists of lectures, practicals and/or field classes. At the end of each unit there will be an unit examination. MODULE 1 - INTRODUCTORY SCIENCES Pre-course Mathematics or Biology Forest Disease and Pest Management Tree Physiology Statistics and computing Geology and soil science MODULE 2 - ECOLOGY AND BIODIVERSITY Taxonomy and Dendrology Tropical Forest Ecology Biodiversity Conservation MODULE 3 - SILVICULTURE AND FOREST MANAGEMENT Forest Inventory and Mensuration Forest Management Silviculture Tree breeding and Improvement Forest products and technology Multiple-use forest management MODULE 4 - RURAL DEVELOPMENT FORESTRY Agroforestry Social forestry and Rural sociology MODULE 5 - NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Hydrology and Climatology Watershed and water resource management Natural Resources Mapping (Surveying, photo-interpretation and mapping) Remote sensing and GIS Land use planning and management Resource and Environmental economics Environmental policy and planning MODULE 6 - POLLUTION PREVENTION AND WASTE MINIMIZATION Environmental chemistry, microbiology and epidemiology Pollution control and waste management Environmental Legislation and Impact assessment Corporate Environmental Management (Integration of environmental management with other business functions) Global and National Environmental Trends ASSIGNMENTS There are four types of assignments: Seminar presentations Seminar and Field diaries Case study Management Plan RESEARCH PROJECT Each student is required to carry out a research project in line with national and departmental research goals, and submit a dissertation at the end of the course. The dissertation is assessed by internal and external examiners and students will be asked to defend their work in a viva voce examination.
