Function title: PhD Student in (Medical) Biology or Biochemistry
PhD position available at the Department of Cell Biology, section Radiation and Stress Cell Biology. Recently we have shown that genes involved in DNA repair mechanisms and in carcinogenesis are evolutionary conserved. (see also: Sibon, Nature Genetics, 2003: Sibon et al., Nature Cell Biology 2000; Sibon et al., Current Biology, 1999; Sibon et al., Nature, 1997). In our laboratory we use Drosophila melanogaster to perform a forward genetic screen to identify novel genes involved in survival mechanisms after DNA damaging events. Subsequently, we will identify the human homologues of these genes and study the role of these genes in tumorigenesis in detail.

The project
The successful applicant will participate in the above mentioned research and will characterize one of the already identified sensitive mutants. He/she will publish the data in high profile journals. After four years a thesis must be written and a PhD degree should be obtained.

- Masters degree in (Medical) Biology of Biochemistry
- motivated and enthusiastic
- interest in basic research
