Function title: PhD students (AIOs 2x) 3D medical image segmentation project
Three-dimensional (3D) imaging plays a crucial role in biomedical research and medical practice. Modern scanners are faster, and generate data with higher resolution than ever before. One of the main challenges presented by these advantages is the analysis by radiologists of all this data.
Automatic segmentation (dividing the data into meaningful objects, like organs) would be a great help in interpretation and automatic measurements. But currently no generic computational methods exist to properly do this. This project will address the problem of efficiently generating models from sets of 3D image scans, which incorporate the variation that is present in the data, in order to automatically segment these scans. The focus will be on thorax images, both CT and MR. We are interested in segmentation of the lungs, lung lobes and lung segments, the bronchial tree, the heart, the coronary arteries and the bony anatomy of the thorax. Other tasks may also be considered. In particular we aim to investigate how contextual information (for example, the location of other, nearby organs) can help in solving difficult segmentation tasks. This is akin to the use of anatomical knowledge by human observers.
On a 3D medical image segmentation project there are positions available for two PhD students (AIOs)
The two students will collaborate closely, and will have excellent research facilities, including access to the latest CT and MR scanners for data collection. They will interact with radiologists and medical researchers, and are housed in the Radiology Department.
Segmentation is one of the most challenging research areas in medical image analysis.

Required education/skills: University Graduate
The successful candidate has received a Master's degree in physics, electrical engineering, mathematics, statistics, biomedical engineering or computer science. Experience with (medical) image processing techniques is an advantage. You should be familiar with programming in C++. You should be able to work in a multi-disciplinary team that includes radiologists. Strong theoretical skills and affinity with medical imaging are required.

Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: 4 years
Maximum hours per week: 40

Additional conditions of employment:
As a PhD student you will get a temporary position of four years. Payment is according to the standard payment of PhD students in The Netherlands. Research will be carried out in Utrecht (University Medical Center) or Rotterdam (Erasmus Medical Center).
