Hallai halla ko desh (Commentary) Bhupi Sherchan, one of Nepal’s most gifted poets, perhaps, could not be more exact when he wrote “Yo hallai halla ko desh” (This country is a land of rumours). The poem was a reflection of the poet’s deep understanding of Nepali society where nothing spreads like a rumour. There have been times when vicious rumours have reigned supreme, causing enough chaos, confusion and panic in Nepali society. The riots and subsequent curfew in Kathmandu resulting from the fabricated “true story” behind the tragic Royal Palace Massacre in 2001 are still afresh in our memories. All that is now just water under the bridge. Similarly, a few years back, rumours about Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan expressing anti-Nepal sentiments in an interview given to a television channel had triggered violent protests against India, people of Indian origin and Nepali theaters running movies featuring the said actor, which in turn provoked a police firing in which five people were killed. A fresh rumour, about another mishap at the Royal Palace- in which Crown Princess Himani was said to be killed and some other members of the Royal Family injured- gripped the entire capital city and was percolating to the rest of the country. People were making phone calls to those who they thought could verify the “news”. Through e-mails and internet chat sites, the fabricated story, which was nothing but a rumor-monger’s notoriety intended at spreading panic in society, spread like a wildfire without any known authority for its truth. On Saturday evening (September 4) when the local television channels telecasted news coverage of Crown Prince Paras and Crown Princess Himani paying visit to the Hanumandhoka Durbar Sqare Complex, many said that the royal couple had to come in public through a courtesy visit to dispel the reigning rumours. But there were still those who said the video footage was an old one, shot during a different occasion sometime in the past! This piece is a sincere attempt, written with a hope to remove all the doubts from the hearts of these gullible people and tell them that our crown prince and crown princess are safe and in good health. But the moot question is why are we always swayed away by such rumours, and do not think twice before telling about it to somebody else? Why are we easily deceived? A political analyst says, “We don’t look for a reason to believe or not to believe a rumour. We enjoy rumours and one about the Palace or the Royal Family spreads faster than the wildest wildfire.” Experience has shown that each and every crisis that the country has gone through has been followed by completely unfounded and false gossips. Certain elements are always on the lookout for an opportunity where they can fish in troubled waters. They always try to destabilize the society by inciting more hostility and violence. They tried to do the same, though failingly, this time around too. But when will we Nepalese learn? nepalnews.com Akhil Tripathi Sept 05 04 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -

The Killing Of Nepali Hostages In Iraq
P Thapa replied to Pushpa's topic in Talking Point - Khulla Mancha
I agree with rose.....if we were a richer country or a country that made a difference in the world maybe the killers, devils, rakshas would have thought twice. Why is it that the Nepalese were the largest amount of hostages killed at one time? What have we done in the world to be a victim to this. We are all victims, even the muslims who have are in thier homes in Nepal scared they will be attacked for something they condem too. We all have to just accept that there are people out there who we can not understand, Rapists. Murderers, Thieves, Pedophiles and many more rakshas in the world. I just hope and pray that our government did all they can to help our brothers be rescued....if not......i hope they never have a goodnight sleep, and may it haunt them for the rest of their lives. -
but you have to be self motivated......if you work or have children then its very difficult to complete

Good point RupsKC1.....i suppose every one is intrigued by your views. But i would like to ask you , How successful you actually are and why does it matter to you so much that our Nepalese brothers are trying to gain a new life here in the UK. You did! Would i be right in saying that it bothers you because, these newcomers who have every chance to make Nepal a better place, just come running here and abandon thier duties as a Nepali. How can 3rd pole say be proud of being Nepali when he has abandoned his country himself. It just clearly makes you a hypocrite. I myself try my best for the country by donating money and sponsoring children to have a better life. However i sometimes wonder where my money actually goes. Please stand forward and prove RupsKC1 wrong......WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR YOUR COUNTRY?

Actually i have also known a few people who have qulified from Boston college UK and got good P/T jobs.......so its not all that bad As long as u guys study hard and make something of yourselves no one can say anything..............right SO stop acting like spoilt brats

directed at.............. rs 1915 Please get your facts right before commenting............... Boston College UK is a college which was opened purely for the nepalese students who do not wish to study and only work so they can extend thier student visa. so you keep your US to yourself...........

QUOTE (thirdpole @ Jul 26 2004, 10:40 PM) RupsKC1, you took things negatively. nobody is against nobody here. if someone tried to correct you, learn to say thank you or correct the commenter if he/she is wrong. if anyone Jealous here, that is no other than youself who really cannot see nepali coming to this country with the dream of better future. how can you say yourself nepali if you have already sold your identity? i would not go far just becasue you have british passport, but the way you showed your attitude is far from imagination. i remember one proverb "Naya Jogi Le Dherai Kharani Daschha". nothing else i have to say. I think the View Rupskc1 has taken is a fair point...i am sure he is not jealous of those who come here for a better life. I am sure his fore fathers came here the same way so why should he have anything against them........ You must try and understand the context of his statement rather then just taking a negative approach just because he has a B.P. Also there is no need to get personal by stating he has sold his identity......if he had sold his identity he would not of come on to this forum in the first place to pledge his disappointment. He is only pointing out a fact that you have clearly forgotten.

I think RupsKc1 is right....Why cant we be inclined to act more superior then the new comers when they act like monkeys in a cage. Yes i was born here i know how to speak Nepali and my parents have taught me everything about Nepal......... but i find it hard to adjust to the nepalese culture and mentality because i was bought up here......which indeed makes me BRITISH whether you like it or not. Anyway this forum has had over 400 views and i am sure a few of you were involved in the fight.........so please lets hear your comment and justify your actions

It was not funny..... but pretty scary My fellow Nepali Brothers How dear you all ruin a total family affair......You guys are probably in the country for 10 mins and think you are all bad boys from NEPAL. Get a Life! Think how much your parents did to get you here and study and become somebody....instead you all act like third class human beings without a clause. WHY fight? What was the reason? It was supposed to be a friendly affair to enjoy with fellow nepalese families. Now it wll be difficult for us to bring our children next year just incase you lunatics start again. If you fools really wanted to start trouble GO BACK TO NEPAL.....and join the Army to make our country a better place to live.
