  14. Why did 'gentleman' Sobhraj returned to Nepal? Keshav Pradhan Kathmandu, August Last year, a Nepalese newspaper wrote that Charles Sobhraj (60), after his reported escape from Nepal in 1975, would often boast that he could bring an elephant into Kathmandu undetected. Now, a day after he was convicted of the 1975 murder of an American girl, questions have arisen about why the alleged serial killer, known for his cunningness, returned to Nepal to spend the rest of his life in prison. Sobhraj, however, insists that this is his first visit to Nepal and has come here to make documentaries on Nepal's culture and traditional craft. His counsel, Sanjeev Ghimire, says, "Sobhraj is working as an assistant producer in France-based Gentlemen's Film Production." Prior to his arrival here, The Serpent was living in luxury with earnings from his book and film deals worth millions of dollars. The Nepalese police picked him for a double murder case that he had escaped earlier after local dailies reported about his visits to a casino near the palace for two consecutive days. Surprisingly, the wanted man neither paid attention to news reports nor tried to run away. Sobhraj appeared to have taken the kingdom as a safe place because of Nepal's silence on inquiries by the French government about his cases in 1997. At the time, India had just deported him to France after a 10-year term in Tihar. Ghimire adds, "Nepal would have replied to France had there been any case against Sobhraj." Interestingly, Sobhraj this time came to Kathmandu from France on a visa issued by the Nepalese embassy in Paris. Many questioned why he was not caught when he landed at the Kathmandu airport. In 1975, Nepalese police claimed, he had travelled on a Dutch passport as Hinricus Bentanja. But the Kathmandu district court quashed this case, saying it does not come under present immigration rules. Besides, police could not initiate action on the murder of a Canadian national because of loss of records. Sobhraj, who is preparing to move the appellate court against Thursday's verdict of the district court, says he should not be tried on the basis of police reports only. He questions, "Where are eye witnesses and evidence?'' News sourse: http://hindustantimes.com/news/181_946454,00050002.htm
