Researchers suggest new strategy in leukaemia treatment !!

Researchers have found that patients with acute myeloid leukaemia have a better outcome if their treatment is tailored to lab test results, according to a study published in the journal Cancer.

Bone marrow transplant (BMT) is standard treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), where the patient has a matched sibling donor. Chemotherapy is also usually given. But better results are obtained if the cytogenetic testing results are taken into account in planning treatment, reports Health and Age.

Cytogenetic testing involves looking at cells from the AML patient and assessing the chromosomal abnormalities that are typical of the disease.

The new study has found that patients who have a low number of abnormalities do best on chemotherapy. BMT is more appropriate for those whose cytogenetic testing shows intermediate to high risk. For BMT carries its own risks and side effects and is not the best treatment for those with less severe disease.

The analysis showed that matching the patient's degree of disease to the treatment gives more years of better quality life.
