RIGT/ESRC Research on Problem Gambling

Recommended Posts

The ESRC, in partnership with the Responsibility in Gambling Trust (RIGT), is seeking applications from within the UK social science community for research into problem gambling. This £1million joint venture will be at the leading edge of international work in the field by supporting an integrated programme of fundamental and applied social science research.

The emphasis is to build on the UK social science research capacity in the field and contribute to the development of the careers of new and outstanding researchers. It will also facilitate the building of strong relationships with non-academic research users and provide solid and independent advice to policy-makers and practitioners.

The following key topic areas have been identified:

Harm and types of gambling, including innovations such as internet gambling

Treatment and specific interventions, including those for groups potentially at increasing risk such as women and ethnic minorities

Characteristics of problem gamblers, including brain functioning and psychological motivations.

Approximately £900,000 is available to support research projects, research projects with linked studentships and postdoctoral fellowships which address these challenges and opportunities. Applications are invited from all social science disciplines.

Applications must be from researchers based at UK Higher Education Institutions and other Research Institutes eligible for ESRC funding.

The closing date for all applications is 5pm on 23rd September 2005. It is anticipated that projects will commence in January/February 2006.

There will be an 'Information Seminar' for potential applicants on 14th July 2005 and another early September (TBA) in London. Interested parties will be able to seek advice from the ESRC and RIGT regarding the scope of the programme and ask questions about ESRC application procedures and research funding rules.
