LARA MAGIC SEES WEST INDIES TO 278/5

A 63-run onslaught in the final four overs from Ricardo Powell and Ramnaresh Sarwan saw West Indies end their innings on 278/5 with Powell undefeated on 40 off 18 balls and Sarwan on 32 off 15.

The longer Lara stayed at the crease the more menacing he started to look, going to his 50 off 78 balls, in 99 minutes including five fours and one six. The 100 partnership came up in 143 balls of which Lara scored 62, having contributed 35 runs in the last 50 of the partnership.

The breakthrough for South Africa came in the 31st over when Klusener had Chanderpaul, trying to steer the ball to third-man, caught behind by Mark Boucher standing up to the wicket for 34. The 102-run partnership falling 4 runs short of breaking the existing third wicket partnership for West Indies against South Africa.

Lara, not deterred by the return of both Pollock and Ntini, unleashed some glorious shots. An effortless straight drive off Ntini raced away to the boundary only to be answered by a short ball from the speedster that put the batsman on the seat of his pants as he overbalanced in attempting to avoid the lifter.

Another 50 partnership between Lara and Carl Hooper followed in 48 balls and 39 minutes. Hooper content on giving the strike to his senior partner contributed 19 runs to the partnership.

Klusener, back into the attack, felt the brunt of the Lara high back-lift. Slapping the first ball for four he followed it up with a six clipped off the legs over square leg. With 15 runs coming off the over Klusener was quickly removed from the attack after bowling only the one over in his second spell.

Donald fared no better with Hooper cutting the second and then pulling the third ball for consecutive fours.

Lara, dropped by Kallis off the very first ball he faced, went to a brilliant hundred off 121 balls and 160 minutes including 10 fours and two sixes. His second fifty coming off 43 balls.

The brilliance of Lara’s innings could only be ended by brilliance. Trying to loft Ntini over the inner ring on the leg side, he only succeeded in getting a leading edge. Pollock running and diving towards mid on from mid wicket took an exceptional catch, getting both hands to the ball and holding on as he landed heavily.

With Lara out for 116 off 134 balls, including 12 fours and two sixes, and West Indies 215/5 in the 46th over, all looked good for South Africa.

The Powell Sarwan partnership changed all that. Scoring the 63 runs in 28 minutes including seven fours and three sixes.

South Africa, finishing their 50 overs outside the time window have been fined one over and will only have 49 overs to reach the target of 279.

Yeah, here too....

Inspired Lara leads West Indies rally

Brian Lara struck a masterful century as West Indies recovered from a shaky start to post an imposing total of 278 for five in the opening World Cup Group B game against South Africa on Sunday.

Lara, dropped first ball, scored his 16th one-day hundred in his first competitive match since collapsing with a mystery illness at the Champions Trophy last September.

It was a vintage display from Lara who left the field to a standing ovation after top-edging a pull at Makhaya Ntini as the overs ran out. His 116 came off 134 balls and included 12 fours and two sixes.

Lara's heroics came after West Indies stumbled to seven for two, both wickets falling to South Africa captain Shaun Pollock.

Wavell Hinds got the faintest of edges through to Mark Boucher to depart for a 16-ball duck and Chris Gayle (two off 21 balls) edged on to his stumps as he attempted to break the shackles with a loose attacking stroke.

It could have been even worse for West Indies. In his only piece of good fortune, Lara was dropped first ball, Jacques Kallis diving full length at second slip but failing to hold a difficult chance off Ntini.

South Africa's control in the early stages was such that the capacity crowd had to wait until the 13th over for the first boundary of the innings, Shivnarine Chanderpaul straight driving an over-pitched Allan Donald delivery to the ropes.

It signalled the start of a West Indies recovery as Lara and Chanderpaul added 102 runs for the third wicket, Chanderpaul (34) mainly content to rotate the strike and allow Lara to do the bulk of the scoring.

After a slow start Lara was in sublime touch, lifting Donald for six over mid off and four times crashing Nicky Boje to the fence.

Lara continued to attack after Chanderpaul's departure, flicking Klusener effortlessly over square leg for his second six before Carl Hooper (40) tried the same shot to Ntini and was well caught by Kallis running in from the boundary.

Ricardo Powell, who finished unbeaten on 40 off only 18 balls, and Ramnaresh Sarwan (32 not out off 15) ended the innings with a bludgeoning assault that included 23 off Pollock's penultimate over as West Indies added 110 runs from the last 10 overs.

South Africa: Herschelle Gibbs, Gary Kirsten, Boeta Dippenaar, Jacques Kallis, Jonty Rhodes, Mark Boucher, Lance Klusener, Shaun Pollock (captain), Nicky Boje, Allan Donald, Makhaya Ntini.

West Indies: Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Brian Lara, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Carl Hooper (captain), Ramnaresh Sarwan, Ricardo Powell, Ridley Jacobs, Vasbert Drakes, Mervyn Dillon, Pedro Collins.

LIVE Report to Mid-Day.

Thanks.

First match seems going out of South african hands. Only 4 wickets remaining and 100 run to score from around 11 overs is not impossible, but not easy too.

Dark horse, west indies proving their claim for world cup.
